Why Does My Drain Keep Clogging? The Real Reasons It Comes Back

One clog is annoying. The same drain clogging again two weeks later is a sign that something deeper is going on. When a homeowner tells us a drain keeps backing up no matter how many times they plunge it or pour something down it, we know the surface clog was never the real problem. Here are the causes we find most often on the Central Coast, and what it takes to fix each one for good.

1. Grease and Soap Buildup

In kitchen lines, grease is the number one repeat offender. It pours down as a hot liquid, then cools and hardens to the inside of the pipe like candle wax. Each clog you clear only punches a hole through the middle while the walls keep narrowing. In bathroom lines, soap scum and hair do the same thing. The fix is not another plunge, it is scouring the pipe walls clean, which is exactly what hydro jetting does.

2. Tree Roots in the Sewer Lateral

The Central Coast has plenty of mature trees and older homes, and roots are drawn to the water and nutrients inside a sewer line. They slip in through tiny cracks at the pipe joints, then grow into a mat that catches everything flowing past. If your whole-house drains gurgle or back up at the lowest fixture, roots in the main lateral are a likely cause. Cabling can cut them back, but they grow again, so we often recommend jetting and a plan to keep ahead of them.

3. A Partial Pipe Collapse or Bellied Line

In homes 50 years and older, the pipe itself can be the problem. Old cast iron corrodes and flakes inward, and clay laterals crack and shift. A section of pipe can also sag, or belly, so waste pools instead of flowing through. No amount of clearing fixes a pipe that has failed. A camera inspection is the only way to see this, and it changes the conversation from cleaning to repair.

4. Flushing the Wrong Things

So-called flushable wipes, paper towels, cotton products, and even thick toilet paper do not break down the way they should. They snag on any rough spot in the line and build into a blockage. The fix here is the easiest one on the list: keep them out of the toilet.

Why Chemical Cleaners Make It Worse

Reaching for a bottle of drain cleaner feels easy, but it rarely clears the full blockage and the harsh chemicals can eat away at older metal pipes over time. They also sit in the line and make the job more hazardous for the plumber who eventually has to clear it. For a drain that keeps coming back, skip the chemicals and find the cause instead.

How We Find the Real Cause

This is where a camera changes everything. Instead of guessing, we run a video inspection through the cleanout to see exactly what is happening inside the pipe, then recommend the right tool for that specific line rather than the biggest one on the truck. Sometimes that is a simple cabling. Sometimes it is hydro jetting to scour years of grease and roots. And sometimes it is a spot repair on a failed section. Whatever it is, you get a flat-rate price and a clear explanation before any work starts.

If you are clearing the same drain over and over, stop fighting the symptom. Call the office and we will find out why it keeps coming back, then fix it so it stays fixed.
